At the Subgroup 3 meeting on the October 30th and November 1st of 1991 in Montevideo, in which attended official guests representing the standardization bodies of the four member countries; it was decided the creation of the Comité Mercosur de Normalización (CMN) as a civil, non-profit, non-governmental association, recognized by the Resolution nr. 2/92 from the Common Market Group.
Since April 4th of 2000, through a convention signed with the Common Market Group, the Committee was renamed Asociación Mercosur de Normalización and it became the single organization responsible for the voluntary standardization in the Mercosur extent.
The purpose is the promotion of the standardization and related activities development, as well as, the quality of products and services, in the member countries of Mercosur, with special emphasis to the industrial, scientific and technologic development in benefit of the economic and commercial integration, of the goods and service installment exchange, facilitating by its turn the cooperation in the technical, scientific, economic and social spheres.
AMN develops its standardization activities through the Mercosur Sectorial Committees (SCM), which represent the society industrial segments and have the purpose to establish the standardization sectorial programs and to lead the process of development and harmonization of standards for their further approval by AMN.
